Is there a student in your home that is a graduating HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR who is preparing to enter college?

Is there a COLLEGE STUDENT in your home who needs financial assistance to remain in school?

Are you wondering how are you going to pay for their college education? 

If you answered "yes", please encourage your students to apply for these scholarships, especially for scholars who are living in Public or Assisted housing (Section 8).

NAHRO Merit College Scholarship/NAHRO-LDG Scholars Program - Deadline - Contact Regional Representative

  • Three (3) $12,000 scholarships over four years to assist with tuition and fees which will also include:
  • $3,000 a year for up to three years, as a summer internship stipend
  • Networking opportunities with business and community leaders 

PHADA Scholarship Programs - Deadline - January Annually

Three scholarships will be awarded:

Stephen J. Bollinger Memorial Scholarship ($10,000) will be awarded at the PHADA Annual Convention and Exhibition. The winner will also receive a trip for him/herself and one parent/guardian to attend the convention. 

Freedom & Civil Rights Scholarship ($5,000) - Students must submit a personal essay (350-500 words) demonstrating their efforts and achievements in furthering the values of the civil rights movement. Explain why the cause is still relevant in communities today and how they relate to your educational goals. Include any relevant volunteer experiences and community involvement activities relating to advancing the cause of civil rights.

Nan McKay Pathway to Achievement Scholarship ($5,000) The scholarships will be awarded by the Public Housing Authorities Directors Association (PHADA) which is an organization of 1900 housing authorities across the United States.  PHADA also serves as an advocate before the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on a variety of regulations governing public housing nationwide.


Horizon Foundation Scholarship

Who is Eligible?

  • Must reside in the Willingham Community to be eligible.
  • HHF Residents ONLY
  • Must attend a tuition-based school
  • Must be in good standing with the property
  • Must have 2.0 GPA (Middle and High School)

Scholarship Amount

  • Up to $3,000 per academic year

Criteria for Applicants:

  • Applicants must reside at a Horizon Housing Foundation general partnership or limited partnership. However, after the first semester, applicant does not have to continue to live at a Horizon-affiliated property.
  • Applicants must be in good standing with the property (i.e. rent paid on time, limited complaints, etc.) and with the educational institution. Property manager must confirm this as well; school transcripts must be submitted each semester to confirm this.
  • Applicant must pursue a 2-year or 4-year degree, certification or professional license.
  • Applicant must be enrolled for current or upcoming semester.
  • The university or trade school must be accredited.
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Applicants must have and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA to receive funding.
  • Applicants must submit a 500-word essay emphasizing their contribution to the community.
  • To receive additional funding each year, chosen applicants must submit transcripts to Horizon Housing Foundation at the end of each semester.

Description of the scholarship:

  • Horizon Housing Foundation is a non-profit that invests in low-income housing properties around Missouri, Georgia, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Wisconsin, California, Kansas, South Carolina, and The District of Columbia. We are here to promote and reward you for making a difference in your community.
  • The scholarship will be $1,500 a semester. If the applicant remains in good standing with the institution and property (if still living in a Horizon-affiliated property), the applicant may be eligible to receive $1,500 every semester for a maximum of eight semesters, totaling $12,000. Scholarships will be awarded once approved by the Scholarship Committee.
